10 felt like 5 and 13 felt like 30
One of the many things I learned when training for Boston in 2008 is that there are a few good days of training and many, many bad days. Two weeks ago, I had one of those good days. I ran my first "long" run of 10 miles and I felt great. It was a cold and blustery day but with the wind behind me on my last mile, I felt like I could have run another 3 without a problem. I have learned to hold fast to those moments - tighten your hands around them as if they are your first born child and never let go....never, ever, let go. The running gods felt I needed a reminder of that rule, as the following weekend I ran 13 miles that felt like this:
Unlike that good looking fella, I didn't have a medal dangling around my neck. All I had was tired legs, blistered feet, and an understanding that I better crank up my intensity over the next 2 months. That cranking up is now underway....

The Mayans Were Wrong
As we're all familiar, the Mayan calendar ended in December of 2012. After my run in shorts and a t-shirt on a 50 degree January day, I'm convinced it will end much sooner. In the meantime, I need to get my butt in gear as the marathon is fast approaching. Yesterday, I did a 5 mile loop that has become my regular route. Half of the loop is on the Rail Trail bike path and the other half is on back roads through Groton farmland. It's a nice loop that me and my blonde training partner have come to enjoy. I'm lucky to have found a training partner to endure these difficult winter runs with me. As I mentioned, she is a gorgeous, fit young woman who is also new to Groton. She claims to originally be from Newfoundland but I think she's European because she insists on running topless. It's especially strange because most people with 8 nipples would be shy about running topless. Anyhow, when I'm having difficulty motivating, I just ask her if she's up for a run. Here is what it usually looks like:
